Having just finished reading The Professor and the Madman (Simon Winchester, HarperCollins 1998) about the origin of the Oxford English Dictionary, I thought it might be fun to explore the definitions and etymology of some of these ancient terms, many of which have almost disappeared from modern usage. [I break this project into three or four parts, will remain sotuned.]
